small home

Rambling Ronni: 8 years is a long time. It’s time to move on.

Early, early Saturday morning, way before dawn, I woke up. I couldn’t go back to sleep. Filled with an anxiety similar to what I’d felt the morning before the birth of my third child.

Knowing that the near future was inevitable, yet it still felt so impossible.

Oh, those awful moments of waiting. Of knowing that the then-present would forever be defined as the precursor to what it was that came next. Read more…

700 Sq Ft, Family of 5: “Hurry Up I Have To Pee” One Bathroom House

If there’s one single thing I’m most looking forward to when we’re able to move someday, it’s this: Having a second toilet in the house! For real, when we first moved into this place – without kids – I had no idea of the struggle of living in a small home with small children (especially in the year+ that the full course of potty training seems to take) and everyone needing to use the bathroom at once. And really, why is it that somehow everyone has to go #2 at exactly the same time?? Or while someone else is showering or taking a bath?? And then trying to get teeth brushed while someone just stunk up the bathroom?

Hah, for real. I know even larger families live in a one bathroom house too, but man, we’ve only got four potty users right now and already it’s tough. Those of you who do one bathroom with more people TOTALLY have my respect.  Read more…

Rambling Ronni: My house is small. We need to move. We can’t move.

I’ve been feeling down the past few days. It’s stupid, I know, in the grand scheme of it all. And we’re already so lucky to even have what we have. We have a home, health, happiness. We’re blessed. Truly.

But even still, I’ve found myself discouraged. I can’t tell you how much KP and I would love to move to a new house. A larger house. Or even just a house with a second toilet. Or maybe central air. Or a real backyard. Or, such a beautiful thought – HARDWOOD FLOORS {swoon!}.

When we got back from our big roadtrip a week ago and looked ahead to 2018, we let ourselves dream. We started looking online at rental homes in the area. I even went to a couple showings. Just because. And you know what? Read more…

700 Sq Ft, Family of 5: The ‘Everything Room’: Entryway, Desk Area, Living Room Combo

So I have a small house. The biggest room is the main room you walk into when you open the door. Depending on what you believe to be our proper square footage, this room is around 29% – 35% of our entire house (I did the math. I like math.). So, like, it’s a big deal to get it right. It’s our front entryway. Our living room. Our library. My desk area, craft area, manage-the-house area, command center, whatever you want to call it. Where the kids play. Where we watch tv. Where we put the Christmas tree and fold laundry. It’s the everything room.

Welcome to our home! Read more…

700 sq ft, Family of 5: A Not So Fine Dining Room & Kid’s Play”room”

When you squeeze five people in a 700 square foot house, you have to make sacrifices somewhere. The biggest sacrifice we’ve had to make is in our eating space. We don’t have a proper kitchen table. What?? You might be saying – You have NO DiningTable?!?! Well, sort of. No. And sort of yes, too.

What we do have is the best we can do with the limited space we have: an all-in-one kitchen counter/island/dining table/toy storage shelf!  Read more…

700 sq ft, Family of 5: No Master Bedroom for the Parents’ Room

Back when I wrote my original “700 sq ft, Family of FOUR” post, I did not post any pictures of mine and KP’s bedroom or the “master” bedroom.
A) Our house has no master bedroom officially.
B) There’s not really any “space-saving tricks” in our room, and
C) Our room often ends up being the dumping ground for crap when we’re tying to keep the rest of the house picked up.

But since I’m gonna have a kid in here soon (like, actually HAVE the kid), I figured it was time to finally straighten it up and get the room in order. And hey, if it takes showcasing our room to the world in order to inspire me to action? Well, then, hey – it worked.

700 sq ft, Family of 5: Three Small Kids in a Small Kids Room

Ok, ok, as of the time of this writing, Family Member #5 has not yet officially joined us. But it could be any day now, and we’ve already made the space for them, so I’m gonna show you how we’re planning to fit three kids in a small room.

KIDS’ BEDROOM SIZE:
Width:11′
Length: 9′
Total Sq. Footage: 99 sq. feet*

*I did not measure the closet

P.s. My kids insisted in being in their room (and in some of these pictures) as I was trying to take them. Because they’re kids. And it’s their room. So I let them, hey, if anything, they add a sense of realism to the pictures, right? 🙂 Read more…
